Why is it called "444"?  Since its beginning in 1992, the 444 International Walleye Tournament has grown to become the largest walleye tournament on Lake Erie, attracting teams from Canada and the U.S.  Originally the tournament allowed 4 anglers per boat, using 4 rods, to enter their 4 largest fish of the day, hence the name "444".  Since then, fishing regulations have changed to allow 2 rods per angler.  But “484” just didn’t have the same ring to it, so the “444” name stuck.  It now means:  4 anglers, 4 pairs of rods and 4 fish, plus a small boat category allowing 3 anglers, 4 rods and 4 fish.
